Asbestos Training Courses

Via our UKATA approved training providers ateb consult offer two levels of asbestos training:

  • UKATA Category A Asbestos Awareness (the minimum required under the law)
  • UKATA Non-Licensed Asbestos Work including NNLW (formerly known as Category B)

Awareness Training
If you have no intention of removing asbestos but work on buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000, asbestos could be present and you will need awareness training so you know how to avoid the risks.

Asbestos awareness training should be given to employees whose work could foreseeably disturb the fabric of a building and expose them to asbestos or who supervise or influence the work.

In particular, it should be given to those workers in the refurbishment, maintenance and allied trades where it is foreseeable that ACMs may become exposed during their work.

Non Licensed Training
Persons requiring this type of training would include those whose work will knowingly disturb low risk asbestos containing materials, such as maintenance workers and their supervisors;and those who carry out asbestos sampling and analysis.

In addition to the Asbestos Awareness, those employees whose work will knowingly disturb ACMs, and which is defined as non-licensable work or NNLW, should receive additional task-specific information, instruction and training.

Further details of each course are on the tabs below.

Asbestos Courses

This half day course provides delegates with detailed information on the regulations, how they can affect routine day to day work, where asbestos materials can be found and the precautions necessary to minimise the chances of releasing fibres into the air where they can be breathed in.

For those with responsibilities for premises, the role of dutyholders is also examined, including the need for, and the importance of, reliable asbestos surveys.

Under the regulations, certain materials that contain asbestos may be worked on or removed by individuals who are not licensed with the Health and Safety Executive.

These materials are hard bonded products where the asbestos fibres are trapped within the base material and are therefore unlikely to be released into the air.

They include:

  • asbestos cement;
  • vinyl (e.g. floor tiles);
  • bitumen and resins;
  • textured decorative coatings (e.g. Artex).

Anyone planning to work on these non-licensable asbestos materials must be trained to a higher standard, known as Level 2 training.

The Level 2 course covers Asbestos Awareness (as described above) followed by a more detailed examination of the procedures and equipment required for safe working.

Level 2 training means that a competent contractor can work on many asbestos materials without the need to employ a licensed asbestos specialist, thereby saving the client time and considerable expense.
